Process Innovation on the Innovation spectrum

Part 2: Process Innovation on the Innovation spectrum

Following on from looking at Technology Innovation, this blog focuses on another of the four staging posts that we identified in describing a spectrum of innovation in Blog 1.

Process Innovation

On the innovation spectrum, Process Innovation starts as a type of Technology Innovation, where the technology allows a change in some process of transformation, enabling different materials to be combined using different methods, to achieve the same outcomes in more efficient or effective ways. As we move along the spectrum, Process Innovation morphs from the physical transformation of materials into processes are redesigned by using different data or procedures.

Process Innovation involves handling of objects, materials, information, or ideas to combine and transform them into different objects, materials, information or ideas.

At one end of its place in the Innovation spectrum, Process Innovation extends towards changes in organisational structures, management practices, and workflow dynamics; while at the other a more concrete form of innovation practice can be observed. The study of Process Innovation scrutinises factors influencing innovation initiation, adoption, and impact. Research in organisational culture, leadership roles, and the integration of technological solutions plays a role in shaping innovation processes.

Examples

Chemical processes for Environmental Improvement:

Some routes to carbon capture and storage are process innovations, changing how carbon dioxide is managed to reduce carbon emissions to the atmosphere.

Real time energy management:

Using smart metering supports energy management systems which can contribute to cost and carbon reductions.

Financial Automation:

Financial transaction automation enhances efficiency and enables new connections and transactions.

Being able to introduce Process Innovation is a dynamic capability, playing a role in driving continuous improvement, and in adapting to the evolving business environment.
